Description: Ethnic Jewellery - Turkoman Silver
Wrist Cuff and Finger Rings. Turkmen tribal groups of north-east Iran,
Turkmenistan and northern Afghanistan. Exquisite tribal silver wrist
cuff/bracelet with a long pin clasp, the body decorated with relief floriate
and open-work patterning. Such gaunlet-like bracelets of this style were
designed to resemble the pearl-stitched cuffs of early 19th Century court
dress. Traditionally, Turkmen women would acquire such jewellery through
their family or at their wedding as part of the dowry. It was considered an
indication of wealth and status in the community but also had a talismanic
value. The Turkmen jeweller was always fully employed and travelled between
camps of nomadic tribes or urban trading settlements. He worked within a
narrow range of materials - silver, gold and some copper acquired as ingots
or melted down from coins, and the semi-precious stones or carnelian,
turquoise and amber. Silver sheet was hammered into shape and inlaid with
gilded silver in foliate and scroll motifs which contrasted with the chunky
carnelians and turquoises set in plain raised mounts. Such exquisite
jewellery is often compared with that depicted in miniature paintings of the
16th Century, and is thought to represent the survival of a form which had
long gone out of fashion in urban jewellery. Late 19th Century.
