Description: Giovanni Giuseppe FONTANA (Italian,
1821-1893). David with Harp. White Carrara marble sculpture
(statue). This magnificent sculpture signed on the base 'G. Fontana S'. (S stands for 'sculpsit', Latin for
'he carved it'). 19th Century. Height 157cm, incl. base 7cm.
Biography: The Italian sculptor Giovanni Giuseppe Fontana was born in
Carrara in 1821 and died in London in 1893. He exhibited in London from 1852
to 1886, including the Royal Academy.
Subject: David - the shepherd who became the king of Israel. Much
legend surrounds the biblical account of his many-sided personality. He was
a warrior and a statesman; he made Israel a united kingdom and captured
Jerusalem, making it his capital; he was a musician and was traditionally
believed to be the author of the Psalms.
He is important in Christian art not merely as the "type" or prefiguration
of Christ; according to Matthew he was a direct ancestor.
His attributes are a stringed instrument, usually a harp, and a crown.
Although medieval books of psalms show David playing a harp or
sometimes a psaltery, in Renaissance art, especially in the 16th century, he
often holds some instrument of the viol family (a bowed instrument in
general use between the 15th and 18th centuries, descended from the medieval
fiddle and the forerunner of the modern violin family).
The harp's size and shape varied, usually of slender, elegant construction,
often small enough to be easily portable. It was much esteemed in royal and
aristocratic circles.
Carrara Marble: Carrara marble is the most famous of all marbles, quarried
in the Carrara district of Apuania in Italy. It has a fine, compact grain
and ranges in colour from snow-white to creamy white. It is saccharoidal, or
sugary, and has a translucent appearance in the finest grades. Carrara
marble was used in ancient times and again during the medieval and
Renaissance periods. Much of Michelangelo's work was done in this marble.

Description: Meteorite Sculpture - "The Gundabalos".
Iron, coarse octahedrite, Brazil. Artist: Victor M. Pracas. For
thousands of years locals and explorers have reported rumours of giant
ape-like creatures living in the dense forests of Brazil where supposedly no
giant primates have lived for millions of years. When it was first discovered, this zoomorphic meteorite was believed to be an actual
artefact of the mythical ape-man from Brazil - Gundabalos or Mapinguary.
When Australian artist Victor Pracas heard of the meteorite he purchased it
from the locals and decided to add to the mythology by sculpting a discrete
area of the 'face' to create a more life-like appearance. Other than the
small areas of the eyes and nose, the meteorite retains its original shape
and is covered with the characteristic scalloped flight marks, or
regmaglypts, with a warm and natural gun-metal patina. It is mounted on a
custom iron display base and accompanied by a framed collection of reports,
drawings and photographs relating to the legend of the Gundabalos.
Size: 650H X 340Wmm; weight approximately 22kg. |
