Oil Lamps Division

Ancient Lamps: Clay lamps were the commonest form of artificial light in antiquity. Despite a diversity of form, they worked simply by having a lighted wick in the nozzle and the body filled with oil. These lamps gave much the same amount of light as a candle and finds indicate that, like candles, they were sometimes used in large numbers. The basic development is from open shapes in the form of dish-like lamps, to types with nozzles and steep sides but still essentially open, and then to closed shapes like the later Roman lamps. Early lamps were made on the wheel but many later Roman types were made in moulds, whether wholly or in part.

Attractive lamp of rare elevated form attached by means of the base and a large strap handle to a circular drip tray or dish decorated around the outside with medallions and a calligraphic kufic inscription. The lamp proper is also decorated with engraved scenes and text to the top which possesses a broad and flattened lip to the spout.
