Monotremes Division

Monotremes are mammals that lay eggs (Prototheria) instead of giving birth to live young like marsupials (Metatheria) and placental mammals (Eutheria).

Order: Monotremata
Family: Tachyglossidae

Genus: Tachyglossus

Image Code FR482
Catalogue No.: FR482

Description: Echidna skull, Tachyglossus aculeatus.

Size: 105 x 45mm.

Family: Ornithorhynchidae

Genus: Ornithorhynchus

Image Code FR483
Catalogue No.: FR483

Description: Platypus. Ornithorhynchus anatinus. Known as the Duck-Billed Platypus it is perhaps the strangest animal known. It lays eggs, yet suckles its young. It has fur like a seal, tail like a beaver and a bill like a duck. Oddest of all are the large, hollow spurs on its rear feet connected to venom glands. The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a semi-aquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Together with the four species of echidna, it is one of the five extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young. It is the sole living representative of its family (Ornithorhynchidae) and genus (Ornithorhynchus), though a number of related species have been found in the fossil record.

Size: 110 X 48mm.
