Cave Formations

A stalactite (Greek, from the word for "drip" and meaning "that which drips") is a type of speleothem (secondary mineral) that hangs from the ceiling or wall of limestone caves. It is sometimes referred to as dripstone.

Calcite is a carbonate mineral and the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate

Candlerock Orange Onyx

Image Code F3640
Catalogue No.: F3640

Description: Mineral crystal. Candlerock Orange Onyx. Onyx is a cryptocrystalline form of quartz. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color (save some shades, such as purple or blue.) Commonly, specimens of onyx available contain bands of colors of white, tan, and brown. Sardonyx is a variant in which the colored bands are sard (shades of red) rather than black. Pure black Onyx is common, and perhaps the most famous variety, but not as common as Onyx with banded colors.

Opalised Fossils

Image Code F3394
Catalogue No.: F3394

Description:. Mineral. Fossilized Shells (opalised) . 2 pieces.

 Mineraloid Chemical. Hydrated silica. SiO2·nH2O.

Opal is a mineraloid gel which is deposited at a relatively low temperature and may occur in the fissures of almost any kind of rock, being most commonly found with limonite, sandstone, rhyolite, and basalt. The water content is usually between three and ten percent, but can be as high as 20%. Opal ranges from clear through white, gray, red, orange, yellow, green, shore, blue, magenta, rose, pink, slate, olive, brown, and black. Of these hues, the reds against black are the most rare and dear, whereas white and greens are the most common; these are a function of growth size into the red and infrared wavelengths. Common opal is truly amorphous, but precious opal does have a structural element. The word opal comes from the Latin opalus, by Greek opallios, and is from the same root as Sanskrit upálá[s] for "stone", originally a millstone with upárá[s] for slab. Opals are also Australia's national gemstone.

Description: Trinitite. new Mexico, USA. On 16 July 1945, the first atomic bomb was detonated at the trinity site in new Mexico. The resultant shock and fireball formed a crater depression approximately 750m in diameter and scorched and fused the desert sand resulting in the formation of this green impact glass around the crater. This material is now very scarce as the impact test site was covered over.

Size: 15mm.

Description: Rocky deposit formed when hydrothermal waters are vented from the sea floor directly from pools of sub-surface rocks of molten gold, copper, silver and other metals which cooled and formed "chimneys". The chimneys or hydrothermal vents are laced with gold, silver, nickel and other elements. They also attract microbial life that can survive in such toxic, inhospitable environments where superheated fluids reach temperatures up to 110C at pressures of 150 atmospheres.

Size: 96 x 81mm.
