Quartz Geodes Category
Geodes (Greek
geoides, "earthlike") are geological
rock formations which occur in
sedimentary and certain volcanic
rocks. Geodes are essentially rock cavities or vugs with internal crystal
formations or concentric banding. The exterior of the most common geodes is
generally
limestone or a related rock, while the interior contains quartz crystals
and/or
chalcedony and other mineral deposits. Other geodes are completely filled with crystal, being
solid all the way through. These types of geodes are called
nodules.
The size of the crystals, including their form and shade of color,
vary—making each geode unique.
Minerals found in geodes include
quartz and chalcedony, calcite, selenite, marcasite and pyrite, barite,
sphalerite, strontianite, pyrolusite, goethite and kaohnite.
There is no easy way of telling what the inside of a geode holds until it
is cut open or broken apart, however, geodes from any one locality usually have
a more restricted variety of interior mineralization.

Geodes are rocks that
are plain on the outside but can have beautiful crystals on the inside.
Geodes are created in the hollow areas of soil such as animal burrows or
tree roots. They are also formed in the bubbles in volcanic rock. Over time,
dissolved minerals seep into a hollow area and harden into an outer shell
creating the geode. The minerals continue to form on the inside walls of the
shell, growing towards the centre.
